The Triangle of Storytelling

Setup, Conflict, and Resolution

Neon green triangle labeled "Setup," "Conflict," "Resolution" on a black background. Text reads "The Triangle of Storytelling" and "ThinkinginTriangles.com".

The triangle of Setup, Conflict, and Resolution forms the backbone of any great story. These three elements provide structure and engage the audience by guiding them through an emotional and logical journey.

  1. Setup: The setup establishes the foundation of the story. It introduces the characters, setting, and initial circumstances. This is where the audience learns what’s at stake and connects with the story’s world. A strong setup hooks the audience and sets expectations.

  2. Conflict: Conflict is the heart of the story. It introduces challenges, obstacles, or opposing forces that the characters must face. Conflict drives the plot forward, creating tension and keeping the audience invested in how the story will unfold.

  3. Resolution: The resolution ties the story together, resolving the conflict and delivering closure. It provides answers, emotional payoff, and a sense of completeness.

Balancing setup, conflict, and resolution ensures a compelling and memorable story arc.
