The Triangle of Prioritization

Must, Want, and Should

The triangle of Must, Want, and Should provides a powerful framework for organizing life’s actions and priorities. Each represents a distinct category of how we approach what we do.

  1. Must: These are non-negotiable obligations—things you cannot avoid or ignore. Musts include essential responsibilities like paying bills, going to work, or taking care of your health. They sustain life’s structure and stability.

  2. Want: Wants reflect your desires and passions. These are the activities you pursue for joy, fulfillment, or curiosity. Wants fuel creativity, happiness, and personal growth, but without balance, they may overshadow priorities.

  3. Should: Shoulds represent moral or societal expectations—things you feel compelled to do, like volunteering or improving yourself. While valuable, shoulds can lead to guilt if over-prioritized or ignored.

Balancing must, want, and should is key to a meaningful and harmonious life. Address obligations, honor desires, and embrace shoulds thoughtfully to achieve balance and purpose.
