The Triangle of Fire

Fuel, Heat, and Oxygen

Glowing green triangle labeled "Fuel," "Heat," "Oxygen" on black background. Text reads "The Triangle of Fire" and "ThinkinginTriangles.com."

The triangle of Fuel, Heat, and Oxygen represents the three essential components of fire, often referred to as the fire triangle. Each element is critical, and fire cannot exist without all three.

  1. Fuel: Fuel is the material that burns, providing the energy for the fire. This can be anything combustible, such as wood, paper, or gasoline. Without fuel, there’s nothing for the fire to consume and sustain itself.

  2. Heat: Heat is the energy source that raises the fuel to its ignition temperature. It initiates and sustains the chemical reaction of combustion. Without sufficient heat, the fuel cannot ignite or maintain the fire.

  3. Oxygen: Oxygen is necessary for combustion, supporting the chemical reaction that keeps the fire burning. Without oxygen, the fire is smothered and extinguishes.

Understanding the balance of fuel, heat, and oxygen is essential for controlling, preventing, or extinguishing fires effectively.
